The Opportunity
Velma’s House is a low-barrier, Indigenous-led safe space designed to support women and gender-diverse individuals who are unsheltered, experiencing sexual exploitation, or facing gender-based violence. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Training and Floor Supervisor to ensure that staff are well-trained to respond to crises and that Velma’s House runs smoothly 24/7. You will mentor and train staff, oversee day-to-day operations, and ensure participants receive compassionate, timely, and culturally safe care. This role is integral to maintaining a supportive environment for both staff and participants, while embodying the values of trauma-informed and harm reduction care.

What You’ll Be Doing…

  • Design and implement training programs to equip staff with the skills needed for crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction
  • Guide new staff through the onboarding process and provide ongoing mentorship and professional development opportunities
  • Maintain an active presence in the safe space, overseeing staff performance, ensuring smooth operations, and addressing any issues that arise
  • Conduct regular check-ins to ensure a respectful, calm, and safe environment for all
  • Support and manage crisis intervention by offering coaching to staff, and if required provide direct assistance to participants experiencing crisis
  • De-escalate situations using trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches, ensuring the safety of both participants and staff.
  • Provide guidance, conflict resolution, and feedback to staff, conducting performance evaluations and implementing coaching plans when necessary
  • Play an important role in ensuring the well-being and emotional support of your team
  • Manage the inventory of essential supplies like hygiene products, harm reduction kits, and naloxone
  • Take part in an on-call rotation, providing leadership and crisis management during off-hours when needed, ensuring 24/7 coverage and continuity of care

You Have…

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 3-5 years in a supervisory role within social services, shelters, or crisis intervention settings
  • Strong understanding of harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and knowledge of Indigenous traditions and healing practices
  • Certifications in First Aid, Crisis Management, and Opioid Reversal Training required
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with experience in high-pressure environments
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle is required
  • Satisfactory completion of recent (as of the last 6 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; Child Abuse Registry Check; Adult Abuse Registry check
