Capital Expansion Update – December 2024
December 2024 – Sākihiwēwin Lodge is in progress…
As 2025 approaches, we eagerly anticipate returning to our 455 McDermot Avenue location. In the photo above, we see the two new doors which will welcome our daycare children and parents (left side between pillars) and the main doors (right side) for participants and community. On the left side of the daycare doors will be the daycare outdoor play area. The main doors will lead out into the outdoor gathering space which will feature an outdoor structure, fire pit, seating, lighting, various plants, and greenery.
We are also excited to share that located on the east side of the building, off of Gertie Street, we are also building an all-season sweat lodge. A new building will house the urban sweat lodge, along with a kitchen area, a washroom and two change rooms. This is something we have dreamed of for a while, and it will ensure community can access traditional healing practices year round. This new build will also be ready in 2025.
Ka Ni Kanichihk’s vision is a shared achievement with community and all who have walked together with us on this path. We thank the many donors, funders, and team members for their part and commitment to growth, wellness, and community. Together, we are creating pathways for meaningful and transformational change. We look forward to welcoming you back into the Sākihiwēwin Lodge to participate in educational and youth programs or to attend events. Supporting and building up a more stable community makes a better Winnipeg for all.
