Restoring the Sacred- 2nd Annual Round Dance

February 13, 2026
On February 13, our Restoring the Sacred Program proudly hosted its 2nd Annual Round Dance at the Viscount Gort Hotel. The evening began in a good way with a Pipe Ceremony led by Leslie Spillett- one of Ka Ni Kanichihk’s founders and a current Kokum at the Mino Pimatisiwin Sexual Wellness Lodge. Leslie carried the Pipe, and was joined in song by Emcee, Ray “Coco” Stevenson and our Butterfly Club participants.
Following the Pipe Ceremony, guests gathered to share a delicious feast before the First Song began at 7:00 p.m., calling everyone into the circle in a good way. Many talented drummers and singers guided us with their songs throughout the night.
A round dance is a traditional Cree ceremony where people gather in a large circle to dance to the rhythm of singers and hand drums. The purpose of the round dance is to bring people together in unity, healing, and remembrance. Singers bring their hand drums and stand together in a circle in the center of the room, singing and drumming in time with one another. Around them, dancers join hands and move clockwise in a large circle, stepping with the rhythm of the songs. The atmosphere is welcoming and respectful- people can join the dance whenever they feel called, step out whenever they need to, or simply sit, watch, and listen.
Community members travelled from all over Manitoba, as well as Saskatchewan and Ontario, to be part of this special gathering on February 13. With more than 600 guests attending throughout the evening, the round dance was a beautiful reflection of connection and ceremony. We were also proud to honour four graduates with star blankets in recognition of their achievements.
With another incredible turnout for the second year in a row, we look forward to continuing this meaningful event in the years to come.
