Mushkowzee Ikwe (Strong Woman’s) Project – Mentor



Full Time (40 hours per week)
Hourly Wage: $19.00 to $21.00 per hour

About the Role:

The Mushkowzee Ikwe (Strong Woman’s) Project is a community-based initiative designed to support Indigenous females and non-binary youth (ages 14 to 29) who are at risk of sexual exploitation, sex trafficking, involvement in the justice system, and/or living in poverty. The program provides culturally grounded, holistic supports, including group learning sessions, employment training, academic tutoring, and connections to community resources such as counselling and addiction treatment.

The Mushkowzee Ikwe Mentor is responsible for delivering life skills programming to youth through one-on-one and small group sessions. This role focuses on providing essential skills necessary for participants to function successfully within the broader community. The Mentor supports youth in skill development, cultural connection, goal setting, and accessing external resources to foster personal growth and independence.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Facilitating life skills sessions on financial literacy, cooking, shopping, communication, conflict resolution, problem-solving, gang awareness, sexual exploitation, and substance use awareness
  • Providing pre-employment workshops, including resume writing, job searches, interview skills, and workplace readiness
  • Supporting participants in obtaining skill-specific certifications such as Food Handler’s Certificate, First Aid/CPR, and Driver’s Education
  • Assisting with computer literacy training, career exploration, volunteering opportunities, and post-secondary education tours
  • Engaging youth with Indigenous cultural practices such as sweat lodges, Sundance, medicine picking, full moon and water ceremonies, pipe ceremonies, sharing circles, and naming ceremonies
  • Assisting youth in accessing psychological services, addiction treatment, housing, income assistance, child care, education, and food security
  • Working closely with collateral agencies, probation services, families, and community organizations to ensure comprehensive wraparound supports
  • Maintaining accurate records, including participant files, daily logs, and session reports

Who You Are:

  • Positive role model that understands how to foster supportive mentorship relationships with participants to encourage engagement and growth
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse individuals and communities
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and ways of being
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate life skills programming
  • Experience in case management, goal setting, and support referrals
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including Elders, families, and community organizations
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, harm reduction, and strength-based approaches
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries

You Have:

  • Relevant post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Youth Work, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in the non-profit sector or community-based organizations is an asset
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle is required
  • Satisfactory completion of recent (as of the last 6 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; Child Abuse Registry Check; Adult Abuse Registry check
