Ka Ni Kanichihk is excited to invite you to join us Thursday, June 19th, 2025, to mark 24 years of celebrating Indigenous resilience, relationship, and reconciliation.

We are proud to announce our two emcees for this year’s event, Tasha Spillett (Ph.D.), and Niigaan Sinclair (Ph.D.).

Tasha Spillett draws her strength from both her Cree & Trinidadian bloodlines. She is a New York Times Bestselling author, mother, activist and academic/educator. Tasha is most heart-tied to community-led work that centres-upon land and water defense, and the protection and advancement of Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit+ Peoples.

Through her academic pursuits Tasha weaves together her Afro-Indigenous cultural identity and commitment to community and research, which principally amplifies Indigenous women’s demands for MMIWG2S+ justice amidst the ceaseless assault of colonialism.

Niigaan Sinclair is Anishinaabe from Peguis First Nation. He is an award-winning writer, editor, and professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Manitoba who was named by Maclean’s magazine in 2022 as one of the most influential people in Canada.

Niigaan is a multiple nominee of Canadian columnist of the year (winning in 2018) and his commentary appears weekly on multiple platforms across Canada – from the pages of The Winnipeg Free Press to TV shows on CBC, APTN and on his co-hosted podcast, Niigaan and the Lone Ranger. His first book, Wînipêk: Visions of Canada from an Indigenous Centre (McClelland & Stewart, 2024) was a national bestseller that won the 2024 Governor General Award for Non-fiction. He is a former secondary school teacher who won the 2019 Peace Educator of the Year from the Peace and Justice Studies Association based at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

Funds raised through Keeping the Fires Burning provide transformative, culturally safe services and programs. They also support research and the integration of best practices in Indigenous-led community leadership. These are all critical elements in the restoration and reclamation of our positive and powerful cultural identity.
