Capital Expansion Update – March 2025

March 2025 – Sākihiwēwin Lodge is almost ready for our community!
Since our last update in December (which you can view here), our expansion at 455 McDermot Avenue is even closer to opening its doors.
As you can see in the photo, the exterior is coming together, with all openings now closed and more glass and curtain walls in place. Two entrance doors have been installed—one leading into the expanded daycare, which will have an outdoor play area just outside, and the other into the main entrance, surrounded by a beautiful gathering space with plants, seating, lighting, a fire pit, and an outdoor structure.
Inside, things are moving quickly as well: partition and door frames are going up, wall boarding is in progress, and electrical, mechanical, and sprinkler work is underway.
We’re especially excited to welcome youth programs back to 455 McDermot Avenue, where they will have access to brand-new spaces designed to support learning, wellness, and cultural connection. This expansion more than doubles our capacity and includes a dedicated cultural space, a round wellness room, and expanded classrooms and training areas. Families will benefit from a new 48-space daycare, making it easier for parents to pursue education and training. Accessibility has also been improved with a new elevator, two stairwells, and upgrades to the existing building. This revitalized space will serve as a central hub for youth, providing access to resources, cultural teachings, and community connections for generations to come.
For those who missed our last update, we’re also building an all-season sweat lodge on the east side of the building, off Gertie Street. This space will ensure year-round access to traditional healing practices and will include an urban sweat lodge, kitchen area, washroom, and changing rooms—set to begin construction in the next few months.
Ka Ni Kanichihk’s expansion at 455 McDermot Avenue is a shared achievement made possible by our incredible community of donors, funders, and team members. This project is more than just adding space—it’s about breaking barriers, reclaiming culture, and investing in a stronger future for Indigenous people. With this growth, thousands more will have access to vital programs and supports. Chi-Miigwetch for being part of this journey with us.
Keep posted for more updates—we can’t wait to welcome you into the new Sākihiwēwin Lodge this year!
