Velma’s House Update – December 2024

Thank you for your ongoing support of Velma’s House – a nurturing 24/7 safe space led by survivors, where women can access basic needs, resources, compassion, and connection to culture. Thousands have found refuge at Velma’s House since it opened in 2020. Velma’s House has had a couple of homes since it started. Most recently, three years ago, with the support of community and governments we purchased the former Ronald McDonald House on Bannatyne. This home has served the community well but is no longer adequate for the increased need we’re seeing. In an average month, Velma’s House sees between 2,800 and 4,300 visits. To be able to provide the wrap-around supports and services the growing number of women need, we require a different kind of space. With that in mind, we are now planning a move...

Capital Expansion Update – December 2024

Sākihiwēwin Lodge is in progress… As 2025 approaches, we eagerly anticipate returning to our 455 McDermot Avenue location. Ka Ni Kanichihk’s vision is a shared achievement with community and all who have walked together with us on this path. We thank the many donors, funders, and team members for their part and commitment to growth, wellness, and community. Together, we are creating pathways for meaningful and transformational change. We look forward to welcoming you back into the Sākihiwēwin Lodge to participate in educational and youth programs or to attend events. Supporting and building up a more stable community makes a better Winnipeg for all.

Ka Ni Kanichihk Website Update

Over the past month, you may have noticed that our website has a new look! We have been working for most of the last year to update our website, giving it a more modern feel, improving navigation for visitors, and adding features to help us better support our community. However, with such a massive project, there are bound to be growing pains. We are working diligently to clean-up each section of the site and to iron out the wrinkles as we settle into our new online home. Ka Ni Kanichihk is Seeking new Council Members!

Ka Ni Kanichihk is seeking new Council members! We are currently looking to fill two voting positions and one youth representative position. Ka Ni Kanichihk is a charitable non-profit organization governed by a volunteer Council that has maintained a majority Indigenous representation for the past 23 years, with a minimum of 75% Indigenous members and the remainder being Indigenous allies. Our Council members bring a wide range of skills, education, and experiences, with strong connections to both the urban Indigenous community in Winnipeg and ties to home communities in other territories.
