Ka Ni Kanichihk’s Honouring Gifts program aims to provide young Indigenous mothers with the tools, skills, and support needed to further pursue education and employment opportunities while building confidence and strengthening connections to community.

Over the past several months, students in the Honouring Gifts program have had the chance to volunteer at Siloam Mission. Through this hands-on experience, students supported relatives accessing essential services.

Students assisted with meal preparation, sorting donations, and providing support to community members experiencing housing insecurity. Inspired by these experiences and motivated to make an even greater impact, the students came together to organize a fundraising initiative to support unsheltered relatives in our community.

The fundraiser featured student-made items, including baked goods, ribbon skirts, dream catchers, and other handcrafted creations. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, on March 26th, the fundraiser raised an incredible $1,608.95. Every dollar raised went directly towards creating survival bags filled with essential items for community members experiencing homelessness. The success of this initiative is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and caring spirit of the Honouring Gifts students.

With the funds raised, on April 29th, the students assembled and distributed 50 survival bags to relatives in the community. Each bag included a brand-new outfit, warm socks, a bagged lunch, and essential hygiene items to help support individuals facing challenging circumstances.

A special thank you goes to the Honouring Gifts instructors, whose guidance, encouragement, and dedication helped inspire students to turn their ideas into action. Their unwavering support empowered students to take on this initiative with confidence and care.
