On Friday, February 14, our Restoring the Sacred (RTS) program hosted a Round Dance, with around 800 community members gathering in ceremony, song, and dance throughout the evening. Wayne Lalman (RTS Coordinator), Amber Armitage (RTS Youth Activities Worker), and Chavez Green (RTS Mentee) organized the Round Dance. We spoke to Lalman and Armitage about the ceremonial and social aspects and their experience. Restoring the Sacred is a youth-centered, culturally-based program supporting Indigenous high school students with their transition to living in Winnipeg, helping them in reaching their education goals through individual peer mentorship and after-school workshops. On Friday, February 28, we hosted our 11th annual Heart Medicine Gathering at the Norwood Hotel. We would like to thank everyone who attended the event, and everyone who came together and helped make it so special for our community. We had activity stations like button-making, dream catchers, vision boards, a SnapFox photo booth, eagle-feather fan downs, massages, and STBBI testing (GoAskAuntie). We would also like to thank each of the dancers who were part of the Jingle Dress Healing Ceremony. Ka Ni Kanichihk is excited to invite you to join us Thursday, June 19th, 2025, to mark 24 years of celebrating Indigenous resilience, relationship, and reconciliation. We are proud to announce our two emcees for this year’s event, Tasha Spillett (Ph.D.), and Niigaan Sinclair (Ph.D.). Tasha Spillett draws her strength from both her Cree & Trinidadian bloodlines. She is a New York Times Bestselling author, mother, activist and academic/educator. Tasha is most heart-tied to community-led work that centres-upon land and water defense, and the protection and advancement of Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit+ Peoples. Through her academic pursuits Tasha weaves together her Afro-Indigenous cultural identity and commitment to community and research, which principally amplifies Indigenous women’s demands for MMIWG2S+ justice amidst the ceaseless assault of colonialism. Niigaan Sinclair is Anishinaabe from Peguis First Nation. He is an award-winning writer, editor, and professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Manitoba who was named by Maclean’s magazine in 2022 as one of the most influential people in Canada.

Programs are based on community need for youth, women and families, and are grounded in Indigenous ceremony, culture, tradition, and teachings while providing skills, support, and mentorship.
